International Foundation Programme For Academic Year 2009-2010 Print E-mail

The International Foundation Programme will be running in 2009-2010 academic year. The course is taken over three terms. It consists of four compulsory modules and two elective modules.

The compulsory modules are:

  • English for Academic Purposes
  • Integrated Study Skills
  • Two compulsory subject modules

In addition, students will take two elective subject modules that should normally be related to the student’s prospective undergraduate course.

For example, a student enrolled on the Foundation course in Management and Business studies will study

  • English for Academic Purposes
  • Integrated Study Skills
  • Business Studies 1
  • Business Studies 2

In addition, each student will choose two elective modules from the following (subject to availability):

  • Economic Geography
  • Economic History
  • The Environment and Business
  • Introduction to British Civilization and Western Society
  • Accountancy
  • Banking and Finance

Other options may also be available.

The content of the compulsory modules will be as follows:

This module aims to develop students’ skills in academic listening, reading, writing and speaking, as well as to build up their knowledge of English grammar and vocabulary, in order to help them achieve a minimum level of 6 or 6.5 in the IELTS exam by the end of the course. Particular attention will be paid to helping students integrate their language skills and subject study. As far as possible reading and listening tests, vocabulary development, written tasks and language project work will be related to the student’s area of study and interest.

This is a combined study program covering information technology, study skills and research methods. Students will develop skills in organizing their learning, library use, essay writing skills and good debate and presentation techniques. Information Technology deals with word processing and computational skills as well as making use of the internet for academic purposes. Attention will also be paid to understanding conventions and the culture of study in British universities, and other relevant aspects of life in Britain.

The content of the subject modules will vary according to the course of study chosen. Details of these can be supplied on request.

For the first two terms, students will study the compulsory modules, and the elective modules will be studied in the final term. Students will be expected to spend approximately 36 hours per week on their studies. This will include class time, tutorials and guided private study.

Length of Study

The Program lasts for one year full time.

Extended International Foundation Program

If further courses are required to bring a student up to the required level for entry into a British university, the IFP can be extended by an additional twelve weeks. Students will devote the third twelve-week term to writing a discipline-specific assignment in the subject they wish to read at university, as well as taking additional taught courses in business and management disciplines. Students will receive regular supervision and guidance in their assignment from their personal tutor and other teaching staff members.
